TERRANCE STAYED with him, but that didn’t diminish Ashton’s nerves, at least not at first. He did like the company, and eventually Terrance tugged him onto the sofa and encircled him in his strong arms. Terrance didn’t say a word; he just held him. Ashton could almost feel Terrance’s anxiety, but he didn’t know where it came from. Still, it was nice having someone concerned about him, even if he didn’t know why Terrance seemed so intent on keeping him safe.

Ashton knew Terrance liked him, but that alone didn’t account for the way he acted. There had to be something else behind it, and Ashton was more than a little curious about what it was. Terrance seemed to understand a lot of Ashton’s life and what he was feeling. Maybe Terrance had experienced something similar to him. He wondered if there wasn’t an ex-boyfriend out there who had made Terrance feel small and useless. Ashton stifled a snort at the idea. He was willing to bet that Terrance had never felt small in his whole life. No, there was something else going on with him, and it drew Ashton’s curiosity.

“We should go and see what Richard’s found out,” Terrance said softly.

Ashton didn’t want to move. As long as Terrance held him, he felt like nothing bad could get to him. Why that was true, he had no idea, but Terrance was strong and yet gentle, gruff sometimes and yet caring. His outside said “don’t fuck with me,” and yet on the inside he was intense and loyal. Ashton wondered if he would ever get used to the dichotomy of this man.

“Okay,” he agreed, but he stayed where he was.

Terrance chuckled. “You need to get up.”

“I don’t want to.” He nestled closer, and Terrance guided his face upward and met his lips with a kiss. “Now I really don’t want to.” That simple touch sent a wave of heat running through him, and the doubt and reticence from the other night seemed very far away. “If I go there, then I have to face what’s wrong. If I stay here with you, the crap that’s waiting for me can stay out there for a little while longer.” That was probably a stupid attitude, but he was so tired of looking over his shoulder.

“Maybe, but it doesn’t change any of the facts. If Frank is here, then we need to figure out what we’re going to do.”

His choice of words wasn’t lost on Ashton. “We?”

“Yes. Now we should go.”

Ashton sat up and Terrance did the same. They got their things together and left the apartment. As Terrance drove toward the condo where Richard and Daniel lived, Ashton settled low in the seat, worrying the entire time about what awaited him.
